THE KANDARPA HASTI

KANDARP HASTI, also known as Navanarikunjara, is inspired by the Krishna leela. It depicts nine Gopis, or unmarried women, also are intertwined with each other in such a way that they form an elephant. Sometimes, it is a single elephant, but usually, lord Krishna is seen on the top of the elephant with a flute.

A motif that carries mythology in every weave — a symbol where artistry meets devotion.

Among the most iconic motifs in Odisha’s textile heritage, Kandarpa Hasti stands tall as a celebration of love, longing, and divine beauty. Often found in the treasured Sambalpuri silk sarees, this motif is not merely a design — it is a story woven in thread, passed down through generations of skilled weavers.

The Myth Behind Kandarpa Hasti

The term Kandarpa Hasti comes from the celestial love god Kandarpa (Kamadeva) and Hasti, meaning elephant. According to ancient Odishan lore:

The Kandarpa Hasti represents an elephant created by weaving together the silhouettes of lovers.
It symbolizes eternal romance, union, and the harmony of two souls.
In many folk interpretations, the motif depicts the divine love of Radha-Krishna, subtly hidden in the form of an elephant.

This clever artistic illusion is one of the finest examples of how Odia weavers blend mythology with geometric artistry.

A Testament to Odisha’s Weaving Genius

The Kandarpa Hasti motif is created through the complex Bandha (ikat) technique:

✔ Threads are tied and dyed before weaving, making the motif appear seamlessly when the saree is woven.

✔ Each pattern requires days of precision, mathematical symmetry, and deep artistic intuition.

✔ Only master weavers with decades of experience can craft a Kandarpa Hasti with perfection.

This makes every such saree a heritage collectible, not just apparel.

Why Modern Women Love Kandarpa Hasti Sarees????

Even today, this ancient motif is adored because:

It carries symbolism of eternal love, making it perfect for brides and wedding trousseaus.

The saree becomes a blessing wrapped in weave — ideal for special occasions.

Each piece reflects the grandeur and soul of Sambalpuri craftsmanship.

Whether you admire mythology or appreciate fine handloom artistry, the Kandarpa Hasti saree holds unparalleled charm.
